Zoom in on Blossoms and Bugs – Getting Started in Close-Up Photography

Location: The Crosby Arboretum, Picayune, Mississippi

Spend the afternoon photographing magical close ups of flowers, insects, and plants. Learn about focus, light, equipment, composition, settings, and techniques to bring your garden photography to life. You should already have a working knowledge of your camera and settings (f-stop, shutter speed, iso) and be able to shoot in manual mode.

 

Required equipment: DSLR camera. Phone camera OK – but will not be the main emphasis of instruction. However, we will be discussing a few Phone camera techniques. Tripod. Extra batteries and SD cards.

 

Lenses (one or more of the following): telephoto zoom lens, macro lens, extension rings, reversal ring + 50mm lens or higher lens

 

Highly recommended: shutter release, light modifiers (diffusers, reflectors). Optional: monopod, flash/diffuser

 

Bring a Chair for the first half and Backpack or something to carry items during walk.

 

Also, don’t forget: bug spray, sunscreen, hat, water, notebook/pen

Creative Writing Series: Nature-inspired Writing

Spend a relaxing morning writing nature-inspired poetry and prose. Exercises will be structured around participants’ interests and preferred genres.

 

No writing experience is necessary. Suitable for ages 8-98.

 

Bring: your preferred writing materials (notebook, pen, lap desk), walking shoes, portable fest chair, bug spray, something to drink. Optional: thesaurus, some of your own writing or some by someone you like to share with the group.

 

Your guide: Diana Thornton is the Editor in Chief of O Muse! Magazine. She is a singer/songwriter, writer, photographer and musician and has recorded several albums. She regularly leads photo walks at the Crosby Arboretum, and offers classes and tutoring in photography, music, creative writing, songwriting, and genealogy.

Music Series: Absolute Beginner Guitar Camp

Past Events

July 20-23, 2022, 1-3pm

Location: The Crosby Arboretum, Picayune, Mississippi

No music theory. Just Music! Ages 8-98. No prior experience necessary. Start playing the guitar in a relaxed group setting. You will be playing songs on the first day and learn:

  • How to tune
  • Hand and nail care and tricks to build up your callouses
  • Guitar care
  • How to change your strings (and what strings to use)
  • Essential chords
  • What kind of picks to use
  • Strumming and rhythm
  • How to play some songs

Required: A 6-string guitar

Recommended: Electronic tuner, Flat picks, Strap, Guitar case. (Extra picks and tuners will be available for you to use if you don’t have them)

If you need help putting strings on your guitar before the first class, please contact Diana to arrange to come early for assistance.

Tip: Use Light Gauge or silk/steel strings while you’re starting out.

Tip: A smaller guitar is suggested for younger children

Includes printed course materials (chord charts and other information covered).

Your instructor: Diana Thornton has been a singer/songwriter and musician for over 45 years and has recorded several albums. She plays 6- and 9-string acoustic guitars and recently started learning how to play the mandolin and banjo. She owns Crescent Music Services, a CD design and manufacturing company, and has worked with numerous New Orleans and Louisiana musicians. Diana is the Editor in Chief of O Muse! Magazine and a photographer. She regularly leads photo walks at Crosby Arboretum, and offers classes and tutoring in photography, music, creative writing, songwriting, and genealogy.
